More than 1500 million Electronic Prescriptions in Catalonia

The deployment of electronic prescriptions has been fully completed in General Practitioner centers (over 40 different institutions) and most of Medical Specialization care centers. Today the medication can be dispensed electronically in any of the more than 3100 pharmacies in Catalonia.

Since July 2020 the number of  1500 million dispensations has been surpassed, and more than 99.3% of the total number of prescriptions are fully electronic. Only very few prescriptions are paper-based.

In addition to GP prescription, many experiences have been consolidated in both Medical Specialization and Mental Health Prescription, obtaining good operating results of the joint model GP plus Medical Specialization, which have encouraged the extension of the Electronic Prescription in these areas.

This new model is a key tool to improve rational use of medicines and ensure the sustainability of the system. The knowledge base provided by this new model, where health professionals have an end-to-end vision of patient’s medication, is a key success factor to deliver effective, safe and cost-competitive health care services. Since 2005, our Firm has been helping in the Implementation and Development of Electronic Prescription in Catalonia.

Better Consultants has been in-charge of several critical responsibilities in the project, among them:

  • Model Definition
  • Project Management Office
  • GP Centers Implementation Support
  • Support in Medical Specialization Practice Centers
  • Definition of the Clinical Safety Module
  • Training Support
  • System Evaluation

The Electronic Prescription model is constantly evolving in different ways, introducing new advanced features such as clinical safety improvement in the prescription process, managing selective medication dispensed in Health Centers, connecting e-prescription systems already running in other regions, and exchanging prescription and dispensation records with other European Union countries.
